I am constantly seeing posts with the subject that reads:
Looking for a Professional Photographer that doesn't cost an arm and a leg....
I have a question?...
How much does an arm and a leg cost?
I understand we all have budgets that we need to stick to. It's great to see many who are! But...., this statement bothers me for a couple of reasons. It shows the consumer doesn't value what a photographer does and it can be demeaning to the business owner who is trying to make a living in this field.
We all envision amazing images to grace the walls of our homes and to share with everyone we know. In a world where everything is all about the sale and the "cheaper is better" mentality, it's not always that way when it comes to recording your historical moments.
Here are a few tips that will help you find a photographer.
We don't want your arms and legs.. That's creepy.
1) BUDGET and PLAN
When you fail to plan and budget for a photographer, you risk making a choice based on emotions and anxiety. This can cause you to pick someone who is not at the level of expertise that you have envisioned and may lead to disappointment and the loss of historical imagery that you can't replace.
Skilled photographers with years of training and reputation will be on the higher end of the pricing scale. Why? Just like doctors, lawyers, high end hair stylists; photographers have invested into their business, talents and crafts to provide the best quality service possible. That costs money! From education to the equipment used to provide excellent service and products, it's a business expense that the photographer has to break down into their final pricing. When you select a photographer with experience, the end product you'll receive is going to be amazing because you are 100% confident in what they do.
Begin to budget how much you are willing to spend on a photographer then do your homework within your price range. Want the sought out photographer in your area, but the pricing is on the high end scale? If you truly value what they do to preserve your history, nothing will stop you from saving more pennies to get a session with them. Just like the new Louis Vuitton purse that has been melting your eyeballs every-time you walk into the department store. You will do what it takes to BUDGET and PLAN wisely to make that purse yours.
Your history is what's at stake here. Your business brand is at stake here. Remember that!
2) RESEARCH
If you have a baller taste but living on a strict budget, RESEARCH! There are so many photographers out there at different price points. Social media is the biggest platform to find, review images and contact photographers in your area.
Don't be afraid to ask questions! The more info you know, the better your decision making process will be. Like other services you seek, finding the right photographer who will preserve your history at the best of their ability is important.
Ask for a consultation! Step away from the screen and meet the photographer. Consultations are a great way to ask all of the questions you have face to face. This leaves no room for hidden assumptions or weird vibes that you may get when you chat over the screen.
Wouldn't you want to meet the photographer who is going to capture a moment of your life before the actual session?
Do your homework!
3) VALUE
At the end of the day, a photographer is there to mark a moment in YOUR life. Whether it's a new addition to the family, a wedding, senior portraits, professional headshots... etc. Photography is a craft that many people learn but few master.
Budget, plan and research. There is a photographer that will meet all of your needs but most importantly, when you do your homework, you'll find someone who understands the historical significance of every click on their camera.
Let's talk about it!
